Nursery Consultation - Olympic Primary

Consultation on new nursery provision at Olympic Primary School

The senior leadership team at Olympic Primary, supported by the Lion Academy Trust, are proposing to change the age range of the school from 4-11 to 3-11. As part of the process, we are consulting with all parents, carers and community stakeholders to gauge your views.

Currently there is a nursery provision on-site at Olympic Primary, which is run by the Hardwick Nursery team - a separate organisation which is not part of the Lion Academy Trust.  Under these proposals, that nursery would close (and may relocate elsewhere in the area) and the school would seek to launch their own nursery provision for up to 30 children (in the morning and the afternoon - or fewer if there were full-time attendees).

Benefits of this change:

  • We are able to offer 0730 – 18h00 nursery provision for working parents and to make sure that the service is fully aligned to supporting every family who chooses to send their child(ren) to our nursery;
  • The Lion Academy Trust runs nursery provision across the majority of the schools we are responsible for and have been rated as “outstanding” by Ofsted at Barclay Primary - the blueprint model which we deploy in every nursery setting across our schools;
  • By entering the age range to include 3-year-olds, parents will be able to claim their 30hrs entitlement and secure care for their children which is flexible, enjoyable and aimed at meeting the needs of pupils and families for 48 weeks each year;
  • Children attending the nursery will have access to dedicated resources as well as all the external learning opportunities across the school site and will be surrounded by a high performing primary school to make transition into primary school that much easier; and
  • We will deploy the Lion Academy Trust model of nursery provision - which was selected by Ofsted to feature in their “Bold Beginnings” Early Years Review (2016) which drew on the best examples of how nurseries should be run.

It is anticipated that the proposed nursery classes would operate Monday to Friday with AM and PM sessions or full-time places being made available. This will allow parents to not only claim their free entitlement, but also to pay for additional hours at a very competitive rate. This will also form part of the wider extended services offer within Olympic Primary - where breakfast clubs, after school clubs and care and extended hours will are available to support parents locally.

Located in the heart of the school and with access to dedicated play and learning resources, both internally and externally, the nursery will work to meet the needs of every child to ensure they are “reception ready” when they move into their first year at primary school. Admissions into primary will remain coordinated by the Council - and are separate from the admissions into nursery - which the school and Trust will manage.

This six-week consultation programme seeks the views of all interested parties. Once we have received the views back from this period, we will review these and then either reconsult or proceed towards a formal submission to the Department of Education to change the age range of pupils at Olympic Primary School.

Once approved, this will see the new nursery open in September 2020.

If you have any comments or wish to let us know any thoughts on this process, please email us by clicking here or in writing to the school directly - alternatively you can access our online questionnaire here.

We look forward to hearing your views and to providing a caring and flexible nursery service for the children and families in our area.
